Larry Lynn Pohlman, 76, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Larry was born on December 23, 1946, in Worthington, Minnesota and was the son of Gerald Walter and Hilka May (Blumeyer) Pohlman.
Larry graduated from Worthington High School and furthered his education at Morningside College, earning a Bachelor of Music Education degree and eventually a Master of Arts from Northeast Missouri State College (Truman State). Larry worked as a Director of Bands and Orchestras for 30 years in Missouri including: Lebanon, MO, Warrensburg, MO, Springfield, MO at Glendale High School and Springfield Catholic High School, and in Troy, MO. He held membership and/or officer positions in the following organizations: The Missouri Bandmasters Association (MBA) where he served as President, Past President, was a pioneer in the development of the Missouri All-State Band, and was a Hall of Fame Recipient. He was an active member of the Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) and served as a Past President of the Northeast MMEA District. Additional memberships include The National Band Directors Association (NBA), National Association of Jazz Educators (NAJE), Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha, and Past President of the Troy, MO. Kiwanis Club.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Troy, Missouri.
Memorial donations may be made to The Missouri Bandmasters Association for a commissioned work for concert band in honor and memory of Larry Pohlman, a pioneer in the establishment of the Missouri All-State Band in 1977.
